Clanking dishes broke my concentration and I looked up from the magazine I was reading just in time to see her enter the restaurant. The enormous wood doors of the entryway dwarfed her petite frame, but as soon as she stepped into the establishment her presence filled the crowded space. I noticed few people actually looked at her, but, for a split second, conversations stopped and forks hung in mid air while her energy mixed with the dynamic of the room and vibrations were reset.
The corners of my mouth turned upwards as she approached the table. We hugged warmly and she sat down.
“Did you go back to sleep after I called you?” she asked.
“I tried but all I ended up doing was laying there thinking.”
“About what?”
“Nothing particular, I was just letting my mind wander…but then,” my voice trailed off.
“What?”
“I don’t know. Sometimes when I let my mind wander I get hit with moments of absolute clarity where I understand everything and the entire universe makes sense. The moment flashes like light through the curtain separating my consciousness reality from my subconscious dream. The moment is beautiful, clear, and instantaneous. But as soon as I reach to hold it and examine it the light goes out and I am left with a fuzzy memory of a concept which I cannot put into words, a reality which no longer makes sense,” I looked at her with a pained expression.
“At least you have these moments,” she said. “Most people go through their lives unable to even come that close to glimpsing the infinite.”
“It that what I’m doing?”
“Sounds like it to me,” she was smiling. “You’re blessed.”
“I am not so sure it is a blessing,” I said. “It is these pin point flashes of light on an otherwise dim sky which keep me questioning and wondering and believing in another reality, which drives me crazy at times.”
I shook my head, unsure of what to say next. The shadow of this morning’s memory hung at the edge of my brain.
